The Band’s Visit: Power of Music and Universal Language of Human Experiences

By Andrea K. Hammer

While searching through a library movie collection for a previously undiscovered gem, The Band’s Visit DVD cover pops out for several reasons: labels at the top flagging this winner of 35 international awards, a striking image of blue-uniformed musicians traveling to play at a cultural center and a study-in-contrasts photo of the quirky characters encountered during the band’s trip—to the wrong destination in a desolate village. The film’s synopsis piques further curiosity:

“Set against a breathtaking desert landscape, this cross-cultural comedy proves that getting lost is sometimes the best way to find yourself.”

Offbeat Ensemble of Actors in Comedy-Drama

Fortunately in this case, the high-praise blurbs from reviewers also turn out to be true—and more. From the moment that The Band’s Visit begins until the closing credits, this offbeat ensemble of actors strike a humorous note with deadpan facial expressions and waving poses. Instead of using an over-the-top comedic approach, simple gestures—such as trying to teach a young man about how to connect with his date by placing his hands in various positions—results in a hysterical scenario.

Authentic Characters Create Moving and Enlightening Moments

In equal measure, moving and enlightening moments in this comedy-drama are produced with similar subtlety in these truly authentic characters. Most notably, the orchestra conductor with a strict external demeanor finally allows himself a moment to reveal a crushing personal loss and pain with a wince. Making every effort to draw out the reserved musician, his new female companion enlivens The Band’s Visit with spirit and laces her character with underlying loneliness in another tour de force performance.

Encouragement for Screenwriters in Special-Feature Discussion

Screenwriters will also find encouragement while listening to Eran Kolirin’s discussion in the special features. As the writer who took 9 years to complete the script for The Band’s Visit, he admirably describes a desire to get all of the elements “just right,” along with his focus on avoiding cliched approaches to stories about clashing cultures.

Through the power of music and the universal language of human experiences,  this comedy-drama strikes a unique and memorable chord.
